SKAL Contemporary er stolte af at præsentere udstillingen Lunch // Blowers af Hanne Nielsen & Birgit Johnsen: en udstilling, der stiller spørgsmål til vi menneskers position i en verden præget af biosfærisk nedsmeltning, geopolitisk ustabilitet og en uvis fremtid, hvor en ny krise altid blot er lige rundt om hjørnet. Lunch // Blowers forholder sig til de store spørgsmål og de nære relationer og til noget alment menneskeligt, der vækker genklang i en lokal kontekst af Skagen og Vendsyssel.

I Skagen, særligt på denne tid af året, er naturens kræfter meget tydelige. Vejr, vind og et landskab i konstant forandring minder os dagligt om, hvor store kræfter naturen har. Det er en klassisk fortælling portrætteret gennem århundreder i kunst og litteratur. Det lille menneske i forhold til den store natur. Tænk blot på Skagensmalernes portrætteringer af det stormombruste hav, der er som taget ud af Immanuel Kants teori om det sublime. Omvendt ved vi også, at vi som menneskehed er en magtfaktor, en kollektiv gigant, der er en geologisk faktor, som former planeten jorden. Lunch // Blowers stiller således spørgsmål til vi menneskers relation til naturen, og de fællesskaber vi indgår i.

Spørgsmål om fællesskaber er centrale i Hanne Nielsen & Birgit Johnsens praksis, og udstillingens værker retter i høj grad også vores blik mod disse. For hvem er egentlig med i vores fællesskaber? Og hvem står udenfor? Både i de nære relationer med personer tæt på os, men også i relation til det politiske og samfundsmæssige i en tid med geopolitisk uro hvor mennesker er på flugt.

Hanne Nielsen & Birgit Johnsen er begge uddannet fra Det Jyske Kunstakademi og har arbejdet sammen som kunstnerduo siden 1993. I deres praksis spiller videomediet en central rolle, og deres undersøgende, grundige og eksperimenterende tilgang til mediet gør dem til nogle af de mest toneangivende kunstnere på den danske kunstscene. Hanne Nielsen & Birgit Johnsens værker tager ofte udgangspunkt i det nære, men relaterer sig altid til en bredere samfundsmæssig og politisk kontekst. Fra hverdagsscenarier til verdensomspændende kriser giver de os et nyt blik på spørgsmål vedrørende samfund, køn, identitet med videre. Hanne Nielsen & Birgit Johnsen er repræsenteret i samlingerne hos kunstinstitutioner som Statens Museum for Kunst, Ny Carlsbergfondet og ARoS. I 2021 blev kunstnerduoen tildelt Statens Kunstfonds livsvarige hædersydelse.

SKAL Contemporary is proud to present the exhibition Lunch // Blowers by Hanne Nielsen & Birgit Johnsen: an exhibition that questions the position of humanity in a world characterised by biospheric meltdown, geopolitical instability, and an uncertain future where a new crises always are lurking in the horizon. Lunch // Blowers relates to the big questions and the close relationships and to something generally human that resonates in a local context of Skagen and Vendsyssel.

In Skagen, especially at this time of year, the forces of nature are very evident. Weather, wind, and a constantly changing landscape act as daily reminders of the great forces of nature. It is a classic tale portrayed throughout the centuries in arts and literature. The puny human in relation to the great nature. Just think of the Skagen painters' portrayals of the storm-tossed sea, which are almost as taken from Immanuel Kant's theory of the sublime. Conversely, we also know that we as humanity are a power factor, a collective giant, that is a geological factor that shapes planet Earth. Lunch // Blowers thus asks questions about our relationship to nature and the communities we are part of.

Questions about communities are central to Hanne Nielsen & Birgit Johnsen's artistic practice, and the artworks in the exhibition also largely direct our gaze towards these questions. Because who is actually in our communities? And who is outside? Both in terms of the close relationships with people near us, but also in relation to the political and societal issues in a time of geopolitical uncertainty and humans fleeing their homes.

Hanne Nielsen & Birgit Johnsen both graduated from the Jutland Art Academy and have worked together as an artist duo since 1993. In their practice the video medium plays a central role, and their investigative, thorough, and experimental approach to the medium makes them some of the leading artists in the Danish contemporary art scene. Hanne Nielsen & Birgit Johnsen's works often take their point of departure from the immediate, but always relate to a wider social and political context. From everyday scenarios to worldwide crises they provide us new perspectives in regards to questions of society, gender, identity, and more. Hanne Nielsen & Birgit Johnsen are represented in the collections of art institutions such as the Statens Museum for Kunst, Ny Carlsbergfondet, and ARoS Art Museum. In 2021, the artist duo was awarded a honorary lifetime grant by the Danish Arts Foundation.
