Learning Through the Soles of our Feet er et eksperimenterende samtidskunstprojekt med fokus på kollektiv forskning og en række offentlige arrangementer, der har til formål at styrke og udforske "en økologi af kunstneriske praksisser". Ved at hente inspiration fra omgivelserne omkring Asger Jorns atelier og de unikke naturlige, kulturelle og sociale ressourcer på Læsø, fungerer projektet som et udgangspunkt for udviklingen af nye kunstneriske samarbejder og praksisformer. Gennem faciliterede samtaler, kollektiv research, workshops, performances, kollektiv kunstproduktion, gåture, foredrag, filmvisning og arrangementer vil sommerskolen forbinde ideer omkring naturen, kunstnerisk selvorganisering, alternativ pædagogik og fællesskaber til problemstillinger relateret til skiftende økologiske, sociale og økonomiske forhold i en samtidig global kontekst.

I ånden af Asger Jorns praksis vil sommerskolen involvere organisationer og kunstnere fra forskellige lande, der stammer fra de historiske bevægelser Situationistisk Internationale, CoBrA etc. og følge i Jorns fodspor ved også at række ud til andre nordiske, europæiske og globale praktikere fra Norge, Peru, USA, Storbritannien, Italien med videre. Denne internationale gruppe af kunstnere og tænkere vil på Læsø arbejde tæt sammen med natureksperter, regionale kunstnergrupper, lokalsamfund, historikere, kuratorer, arrangører og forskere. Projektet har til formål at udforske dehierarkaliserede kunstneriske og økologiske tilgange til "bæredygtig praksis" på tværs af det kulturelle og naturlige fælles (commons). Learning Through the Soles of our Feet arbejder dermed i et spændingsfelt mellem udviklingen af nye strategier for kunstnerisk organisering og nye former for samvær i relation til de unikke ressourcer som Læsøs landskab har at byde på – ler, tang og salt.

Learning Through the Soles of our Feet søger at skabe en ny lokaliseret offentlig praksis og eksperimentere med metoder for kollektiv kunstnerisk produktion og forskning inden for en tværfaglig tilgang til kunst, jura, lyd, økologi, historie, teori og praksis. Med den historiske kontekst af Asger Jorns kunstneriske produktion, der fungerer som et fænomenologisk afsæt for undersøgelserne, vil Learning Through the Soles of our Feet i sidste ende gentænke sommerskolemodellen, samtidig med at projektet udforsker Jorns arv i lyset af samtidens tendenser, rammesætninger og nye former for subjektivitet.

Projektet er organiseret af samtidskunstplatformene SKAL Contemporary (Skagen, Danmark), f.eks. (Aalborg, Danmark) og Jubilee, en Bruxelles-baseret platform for kunstnerisk forskning. Programmet er kurateret i samarbejde med kunstnerduoen Vermeir & Heiremans (BE).

Learning Through the Soles of our Feet is a multi-day Summer School program focusing on collective research and public events that aim to strengthen and explore “an ecology of artistic practices”. By taking inspiration from the convivial history of Asger Jorn’s rural studio and the unique natural, cultural, and social resources on Læsø, the project serves as a launching point for fostering new artistic collaborations. Through collective performances, walks, talks, screenings, concerts, and events, the summer school will aim to connect ideas around artistic self-organization, alternative pedagogies, and commoning to broader discursive issues related to changing ecological, social, and economic conditions in daily life and across society.

In the spirit of Asger Jorn’s practice, the summer school will invite organizations and artists from different countries emanating from the historic movements Situationist International, CoBrA, etc. and follow in Jorn’s footsteps by also reaching out to other Nordic, European, and global practitioners from Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, USA, Great Britain, Italy, and others. This international group of artists and thinkers will work in close collaboration on Læsø with natural experts, regional artist groups, local communities, historians, curators, organizers, and researchers. In doing so, their aim will be to explore dehierarchicalized artistic and ecological approaches toward “sustainable practices” across cultural and natural commons. This will range from strategies for artistic organization to new forms of conviviality to experimenting with unique resources of Læsø’s landscape - e.g. its seaweed harvesting and salt production.

Learning Through the Soles of our Feet will seek to create localized public practices and experiment with new means of collective production and research within an interdisciplinary approach to art, law, sound, ecology, history, theory, and praxis. With the historic context of Asger Jorn’s artistic production serving as a phenomenological site, Learning through the Soles of Our Feet will ultimately rethink the summer school model while collectively exploring Jorn's legacy toward new forms of subjectivity in light of contemporary conditions.

The project is organized by the contemporary arts platforms SKAL Contemporary (Skagen, Denmark) and f.eks. (Aalborg, Denmark) and Jubilee, a Brussels based platform for artistic research. The program was co-curated by the artist duo Vermeir & Heiremans (BE).
