Soloudstillingen Land of Nod viser nyproducerede og stedspecifikke værker af Mette Boel. Land of Nod refererer til “det mytiske søvnland” og er det sted, hvor man er lige ved at falde hen og overgive sig til søvnen, eller det sted, hvor man lige er vågnet fra søvnen. Land of Nod er tilstanden mellem søvnen og at være vågen, og et desorienterende sted, hvor man ikke nødvendigvis ved, hvor man skal gå hen. Udstillingen tager form som en poetisk udforskning af to steder; det sted, hvor man søger søvnen for at slippe væk og få fred og det sted, hvor søvnen har fået overtaget over ens bevidsthed, og hvor man befinder sig i Land of Nod.
I Boels udstilling er Land of Nod sin egen verden, sit eget landskab. I Land of Nod kan kun visse ting gro, og søvnen hænger over en, som et sted at flygte hen og som en meditativ tilstand, hvor underbevidstheden har kontrollen. Søvnen hænger over en som en lokkende følgesvend og som en skygge man er tiltrukket af, men som kan være svær at nå hen til.
I Land of Nod kobles de golde landskaber på Skagens Odde, hvor naturen ligger i en form for dvale under sandet, til en krop, hvor fertiliteten og evnen til at skabe liv har befundet sig i dvale i lang tid. Med udgangspunkt i personlige erfaringer og en materialenær tilgang til skulpturel og billedlig bearbejdelse formgiver Boel en verden, Land of Nod, hvor søvnen, flugten og den (u)bevidste sorgbearbejdelse får plads til at folde sig ud. I Boels kunstneriske univers bruges naturen og vores omgivende materialitet som en måde at koble det imaginære og det tænkte til en slags virkelighed, hvori der eksisterer en materiel agens; hvor naturen og materialiteten i sig selv kan operere som agenter i vores erfarede virkelighed.
Mette Boel (f. 1982, Skagen) er uddannet fra Royal College of Art i London (2016) og bor og arbejder i Hou. I sin praksis arbejder Boel særligt med installation, tekst og fotografi, og afsøger materialernes og billedernes dobbelthed i en skulpturelt funderet praksis, hvor komposition, lag og æstetik legemliggør følelser og stemninger i et ofte enkelt visuelt udtryk og en kompleks konceptuel kontekst.
Land of Nod er kurateret af Anne Møller Christensen og Sara Løvschall Grøntved, og udstillingen er venligst støttet af Statens Kunstfond, Region Nordjylland, 15. Juni Fonden og Frederikshavn Kommune.

The solo exhibition Land of Nod presents newly produced,site-specific artworks by Mette Boel. The Land of Nod refers to the "mythical land of sleep" and is a place where you are about to surrender and fall asleep, or the place where you have just woken up. Since the Land of Nod is a state between sleep and being awake it is a disorienting place where you don't necessarily know where to go. The exhibition takes form as a poetic exploration of these two places; where you sleep to escape and find peace and where sleep has taken over your consciousness and you find yourself in the Land of Nod.
Boel's exhibition Land of Nod is an imaginary world,- an imaginary landscape. In Land of Nod only certain things can grow and sleep is a place to escape, where a meditative state of the subconscious is in control. The state of sleep is like an alluring companion or a shadow you are attracted to, but cannot reach.
In Land of Nod the barren landscapes surrounding Skagen where nature lies in a hibernation under the sand are connected to a body where fertility and the ability to create life have been dormant. Based on personal experiences and a material approach to sculptural and pictorial processing, Boel shapes a world, the Land of Nod, where sleep, escape, and the (un)conscious processing of grief are given a space to unfold. In Boel's artistic universe nature and our surrounding materiality are used as a way to link the imaginary and thought to a reality in which a material agency exists; where nature and materiality themselves can operate as agents in our experienced reality.
Mette Boel (b. 1982, Skagen) is a graduate of the Royal College of Art in London (2016) and lives and works in Hou. In her practice Boel primarily works with installation, text, and photography, and she often explores the duality of materials and images in a sculpturally grounded practice, where composition, layers, and aesthetics embody feelings and moods in an often simple visual expression within a complex conceptual context.
Land of Nod is curated by Anne Møller Christensen and Sara Løvschall Grøntved. The exhibition is kindly supported by the Danish Arts Foundation, North Denmark Region, 15 Juni Fonden, and the municipality of Frederikshavn.
