Vores samtid er kompleks. Den er multifacetteret. Den er på mange måder uoverskuelig, og så er den præget af krise, sammenbrud og opbrud. Samtiden består af flere sameksisterende tider medieret af den teknologi, der er en fuldstændig indlejret del af vores liv og hverdag. Vores samtid er altså kort sagt en svær størrelse, en slags uigennemsigtigt rod defineret af den ene krise, der sameksisterer med eller afløser den anden; eller som beskrevet af Wendy Chun i Updating to Remain the Same er vi i en tid, hvor vi kan tale om “The present as ‘crisis ordinary’”. Men det efterlader os stadig med spørgsmålet, hvordan karakteriserer man egentlig sin samtid og sin samtids kriser?
Med afsæt i det overordnede spørgsmål og et ønske om at bidrage til en karakteristik af vores samtid holder vi i 2025 blikket stift rettet mod Skagen som et nært og lokalt holdepunkt for en undersøgelse og kortlægning af vores samtid i et globalt perspektiv.
I 2025 er vi stolte over at kunne præsentere udstillingsprogrammet But Is It Now? Temporal Entanglement and Social Symbolics, som består af 4 nyproducerede og forskelligartede soloudstillinger skabt af nogle af nordens mest talentfulde billedkunstnere.
Centralt for programmets udstillinger er et ønske om at skabe rum for kritisk refleksion over tiden, kriserne og den verden, vi lever i, samt at sikre at samtidskunst af høj kunstnerisk kvalitet er tilgængelig her på landets nordligste egn.
Vidnesbyrd fra et sted i en tid
I Skagen eksisterer der et romantiserende narrativ om et sted, som både er nu, men som i høj grad også knytter sig til en fortid. Med denne tendens er det vores erfaring, at krisen, kritikken, det komplicerede og det ubehagelige ofte ignoreres til fordel for det smukke, det rare og det nostalgiske. I tråd med aktuelle tendenser i forskningen og samtidskunsten ønsker vi at introducere et rum, hvor vi ikke ignorerer kriserne, det ubehagelige og det, som ikke er rart, men i stedet skaber et rum, hvor vi i fællesskab kan forstå og bearbejde det. Vi arbejder aktivt med kritikken som en omsorg; et rum, hvor vi sætter spørgsmålstegn ved tingenes tilstand med et ønske om en deraf følgende forbedring. For kriserne udfordrer os. Kriserne stiller spørgsmålstegn ved praksisser, overbevisninger og engagementer og giver anledning til en genforhandling af de givne omstændigheder, hvad end det er af politisk, social eller klimatisk karakter.But Is It Now? Temporal Entanglement and Social Symbolics er således en afspejling af samtidens kompleksitet, og et vidnesbyrd fra et sted i en tid, samtidig med at vi skaber rum for en af samtidskunstens kerneopgaver i det nordlige Jylland; at levere dissens til en konsensuskultur med afsæt i et kritisk omsorgsbegreb.
Ligesom vores samtid er kompleks, sammensat og fragmenteret, så vil udstillingerne også afspejle dette, som deres egne fragmentariske elementer af en fortælling om den samtid, som de er situerede i. Udstillingerne vil på egen vis være udtryk for en turbulent tid, hvor det kunstneriske, det akademiske og den politiske analyse smelter sammen i en stedspecifik kortlægning og undersøgelse af vores samtid og dens kriser. But Is It Now? Temporal Entanglement and Social Symbolics skaber således rum for den kritiske refleksion over det stedbundne og det globale og vil på sin vis være udtryk for og adressere det accelererede kaos, vi lever i.

Fra årsskiftet 2024/2025 er Skal Contemporary flyttet til Det Grå Fyr på Grenen i Skagen. Det Grå Fyr er ejet af Realdania By & Byg og drives i det daglige af Naturstyrelsen som et naturformidlingscenter, der i forvejen også huser den prisvindende restaurant Blink, Dansk Ornitologisk Forening og Skagen Fuglestation. Sammen ønsker vi at gøre Det Grå Fyr til en dynamisk attraktion i Nordjylland, der sætter en ny fortælling om Skagen på dagsordenen.

Our contemporaneity is complex. It is multifaceted. In many ways, it is overwhelming, marked by crisis, collapse, and upheaval. Our contemporaneity consists of multiple coexisting times, mediated by technology as an embedded part of our lives and daily existence. In short, our present time is an elusive entity - a kind of opaque mess defined by one crisis coexisting with or replacing another. As Wendy Chun describes it in Updating to Remain the Same, we live in an era where we can speak of “The present as ‘crisis ordinary’.” Yet this still leaves us with the question: how do we characterise our time and the crises that define it?
With this overarching question in mind, and with a desire to contribute to the characterisation of our contemporaneity, we turn our focus to Skagen as a local and tangible anchor for an exploration and mapping of contemporary times in a global perspective.
In 2025, we are thus proud to present the exhibition programme But Is It Now? Temporal Entanglement and Social Symbolics, consisting of four newly produced and diverse solo exhibitions by some of the most talented visual artists from the Nordic region.
At the heart of the programme is the ambition to create space for critical reflection on time, crises, and the world we inhabit, while ensuring that contemporary art of high artistic quality remains accessible in Denmark’s northernmost region.
A Testimony from a Place in a Time
In Skagen, a romanticised narrative exists of a place that is both of the present yet deeply tied to the past. This tendency often leads to the crisis, the critique, the complexity, and the discomfort being overlooked in favour of beauty, comfort, and nostalgia. In line with current tendencies in research and contemporary art, we wish to create a space where crises, discomfort, and the unpleasant are not ignored, but instead collectively examined in a process of understanding and engagement.We actively work with critique as an act of care - as a space where we challenge the status quo with the intention of fostering improvement. Crises challenge us, they question practices, beliefs, and commitments, creating the need to renegotiate given circumstances, whether political, social, or climatic in nature.
But Is It Now? Temporal Entanglement and Social Symbolics is thus a reflection of the complexity of our time - a testimony from a place in a time - whilst also creating space for one of contemporary art’s core tasks in Northern Jutland: providing dissent within a culture of consensus, based on a concept of critical care.
Just as our time is complex, composite, and fragmented, as will the exhibitions be - each forming its own fragmented element in a larger narrative about the time in which they exist.The exhibitions will, in their own way, be expressions of a turbulent era, where artistic, academic, and political analyses merge in a site-specific mapping and investigation of our present and its crises. But Is It Now? Temporal Entanglement and Social Symbolics thus creates space for critical reflection on both the local and the global life, expressing and addressing the accelerated chaos in which we live.

From the turn of the year 2024/2025, Skal Contemporary has relocated to Det Grå Fyr at Grenen in Skagen. Det Grå Fyr is owned by Realdania By & Byg and is managed daily by the Danish Nature Agency as a nature education centre, also housing the award-winning restaurant Blink, the Danish Ornithological Society, and Skagen Bird Observatory. Together, we aim to make Det Grå Fyr a dynamic attraction in Northern Jutland, setting a new narrative for Skagen on the agenda.
