Udstillingen Broom Buzzems er en refleksion over heden som kulturlandskab og naturområde, der kræver beskyttelse for fortsat at kunne eksistere, som vi kender det. Heden er et sårbart stykke landskab, hvor den hårdføre lyng er første beboer efter udpinsel, afbrænding og slåning.

I udstillingen arbejder Oskar Koliander med heden som karakteristisk og nostalgisk landskab og kulturhistorie og med vores forpligtelse til at vedligeholde et landskab skabt af nødvendighed. I udstillingen fungerer kosten som medierende element i den menneskelige relation til heden, og der produceres en række koste af lokal lyng indsamlet syd for Den Tilsandede Kirke ved Skagen. I angelsaksisk tradition har en kost i grene af lyng betegnelsen besom (på dansk: riskost), der bl.a. forbindes med frugtbarhedsritualer og overtro. Udstillingen stiller spørgsmål til vores naturforståelse og vores forpligtelser over for naturen i installation og lyd.

Broom Buzzems vises i Skagen og er skabt med udgangspunkt i de store lokale hedeområder som Hulsig Hede og Råbjerg Hede syd for Skagen.

Oskar Koliander (f. 1986), uddannet fra Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi og Royal College of Art, London. Bor og arbejder i København. I sin praksis er han optaget af, hvordan den teknologiserede virkelighed påvirker mennesker og verden omkring os.

The exhibition Broom Buzzems is a reflection on the heath as a cultural landscape and natural site that requires human protection in order to continue to exist as we know it. The heath is a vulnerable piece of landscape where the hardy heather is its first inhabitant after brushing, burning, and mowing.

Oskar Koliander works with the heath as a characteristic and nostalgic landscape with cultural significance and with our obligation to maintain a landscape created by necessity. In the exhibition the broomstick functions as a mediating element in visualizing the human connection to the heath, and a number of brooms are produced from local heather collected south of the Sand Buried Church just outside of Skagen. In Anglo-Saxon tradition a broomstick in branches of heather is called a besom which among others is associated with fertility rituals and superstition. Broom Buzzems raises present questions on our understanding of and obligations to nature through installation and sound art.

Broom Buzzems is exhibited in Skagen and is inspired by the vast local heathland areas such as Hulsig Hede and Råbjerg Hede south of Skagen.

Oskar Koliander (b. 1986), graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal College of Art, London. He lives and works in Copenhagen. In his artistic praxis he is concerned with questions of how a technologized reality affects people and their surroundings.
